Olivia Van Goor is a young performer with an old soul influenced by swing and bebop jazz from the mid-20th century. Music is undeniably a part of her identity, her voice being the instrument she communicates with. She draws from the Great American Songbook and other jazz standards in a way that is beyond replicating what has already been done before. Each and every performance and recording exemplifies a rich understanding and musicality that is uniquely her own while still paying tribute to jazz tradition and the ones who created it.

William Bennett has performed in the Southeast Michigan area since the age of 12 and has been a full time working musician for over 10 years. As a freelance pianist, he has had the honor of sharing the stage with many notable performances including Billy Childs, Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, Liberty Devitto, Louis Prima Jr., Jon Hendricks, Paquito D’Rivera, and more. He has performed and toured with various bands all over the country, including an appearance on the nationally syndicated morning television show Breakfast Television. He performs every week at Weber’s Inn in Ann Arbor and The Chop House in Toledo. He received a bachelors degree in jazz performance at the University of Toledo under the mentorship of Tad Weed, and is currently continuing his studies in the graduate jazz program at Wayne State. He was nominated for a Detroit Music Award in 2021 under the “Best Keyboards Instrumentalist” category. He played recently on vocalist Olivia Van Goor’s EP “When the Shadows Fall”. He performs solo and with various ensembles all over the southeast Michigan area, stylistically ranging from ragtime to rock to neo- soul and jazz.

This program is part of our Student Jazz Performance Series.
